TMJ pain, also known as TMJ syndrome or TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), involves discomfort and limited movement in the jaw and surrounding muscles. The TMJ is the joint that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull, located in front of each ear. This joint allows for essential jaw movements such as chewing, speaking, and yawning. TMJ disorders can result from various factors, including jaw injuries, arthritis, dental treatments, genetics, teeth grinding or clenching, infections, and even habits like nail-biting. Symptoms of TMJ pain may include facial discomfort, difficulty chewing, jaw locking, and ear pain or headaches.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), TMJ pain is viewed as a blockage or stagnation of Qi (life force energy) within the meridians that flow through the jaw area. This stagnation can be caused by physical factors such as jaw trauma or emotional factors like stress and anxiety. If left unresolved, stagnated Qi can lead to imbalances like “heat” or “dampness,” which worsen the condition. TCM treatment focuses on clearing blockages, balancing the energy flow, and addressing any underlying systemic issues that contribute to the pain.

Common Symptoms Of TMJ Pain
One of the key symptoms of TMJ disorders is ongoing pain or tenderness in the jaw. This discomfort may be isolated to one side or affect both sides. The pain is often aggravated by activities like chewing or speaking and may be accompanied by a burning or aching sensation, making daily tasks such as eating or talking uncomfortable.
People with TMJ disorders often find chewing difficult or painful. The jaw may feel as though it’s “catching” or “locking” during movement, causing some individuals to avoid certain foods that require more extensive chewing, such as steak or hard vegetables. This can lead to favoring one side of the mouth or avoiding certain food textures altogether.
Many individuals with TMJ pain experience a clicking, popping, or grating sound when opening or closing the mouth. This is often accompanied by a sensation of the jaw “snapping” into place. While the sound may not always be painful, it can be distracting or concerning, especially when others can hear it.
Ear pain or tinnitus (ringing in the ears) may also occur with TMJ disorders. Though the ear itself may not be directly affected, the close proximity of the temporomandibular joint to the ears can cause ear-related symptoms when the joint is inflamed or dysfunctional. This can lead to a sensation of fullness in the ear or an echoing feeling.
