Acupuncture For Shingles

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a painful skin condition caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Although chickenpox typically occurs during childhood, the virus remains dormant in the body’s nerve tissues after the initial infection. In some people, especially as they age or experience weakened immunity, the virus can reactivate, resulting in shingles. This condition is characterised by a painful, blistering rash that usually appears in a band or stripe on one side of the body or face. The pain is often described as burning, tingling, or stinging and may be accompanied by fever, headache, and fatigue.

Shingles is not merely a skin issue; it involves nerve inflammation and an immune response. In addition to the acute discomfort, one of the major concerns with shingles is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a form of chronic pain that can persist for months or even years after the rash has healed. PHN is believed to result from nerve damage caused by the virus. Beyond the physical pain, shingles can have emotional and psychological effects, as the pain and appearance of the rash can lead to feelings of isolation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with its holistic approach to health, provides treatments that address both the physical symptoms and the deeper causes, as well as the emotional impacts of shingles.

Common Symptoms Of  Shingles

A defining symptom of shingles is a painful rash that typically appears as a band or stripe of blisters on one side of the torso or face. The skin may appear red, and the fluid-filled blisters are extremely painful to touch. As the blisters break open, they form ulcers, which eventually crust over and begin to heal.

Before the rash becomes visible, many people with shingles experience a burning or tingling sensation in a specific area of the skin. This discomfort can last several days and is often accompanied by increased sensitivity or numbness in the affected area.

In the early stages of shingles, individuals often experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, and fatigue. Unlike the flu, however, shingles does not cause respiratory symptoms like coughing or congestion.

As the rash develops, it can become intensely itchy. While scratching may offer temporary relief, it is important to avoid doing so, as it can break open the blisters, potentially leading to infection and slowing the healing process.
