Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterised by itchy, inflamed, and often red skin, which can sometimes blister or peel in more severe cases. This condition can greatly affect one’s quality of life, causing both discomfort and, at times, pain. Eczema can occur anywhere on the body but commonly appears on the insides of the elbows, backs of the knees, and the face, especially in children. The intense itchiness can be overwhelming, leading to scratching that exacerbates the condition and may result in infections. The cyclical nature of flare-ups—periods of intense symptoms followed by periods of healing—makes eczema a persistent and frustrating issue.
In addition to physical discomfort, eczema can also impact emotional well-being and self-esteem due to the visible skin lesions. The underlying causes of eczema are thought to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors, making the skin more sensitive to irritants and allergens while also impairing moisture retention. This sensitivity triggers an overactive immune response, which damages the skin barrier and leads to the symptoms of eczema. Common triggers include harsh soaps, detergents, stress, weather changes, and certain foods.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches eczema by addressing the imbalances within the body and enhancing skin health through acupuncture and dietary modifications, offering a holistic alternative or complement to conventional treatments.

Common Symptoms Of Eczema
Itching is the hallmark symptom of eczema, ranging from mild to severe. The itch can worsen at night, disrupting sleep and daily activities. Scratching to relieve the itch can damage the skin, increase irritation, and lead to infections. Effective management involves moisturising the skin regularly and identifying triggers that may worsen the itching.
Eczema often causes skin to become extremely dry and sensitive. This dryness makes the skin rough, scaly, and brittle, increasing its vulnerability to irritants and allergens. The skin’s weakened barrier can’t retain moisture, leading to a cycle of dryness and itching. Treatment typically focuses on applying emollients to hydrate and protect the skin, helping restore the skin barrier.
Inflamed, red patches of skin are common with eczema and can appear in distinct flare-ups across the body. These areas may sometimes ooze or crust over, especially if scratched. The inflammation is triggered by various factors, including environmental irritants or stress. Managing inflammation often requires identifying and avoiding these triggers, along with the use of topical treatments to reduce swelling and irritation.
Chronic scratching or rubbing can cause certain areas of the skin to thicken and develop a leathery texture, known as lichenification. These patches may be darker than surrounding skin and act as visible signs of long-term eczema. Reducing scratching behavior, often with medications to control itching and inflammation, and restoring the skin barrier are essential to managing this symptom.
