Acupuncture For Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s Palsy is a sudden onset of weakness or paralysis in the muscles on one side of the face, often causing that side to appear drooped. This condition results from inflammation of the facial nerve, leading to challenges with closing the eye or smiling on the affected side. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, creating distress for those affected. Though the exact cause is unclear, viral infections are believed to play a role.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Bell’s Palsy is seen as an imbalance in the flow of “qi,” or vital energy, and blood to the face. TCM aims to restore this balance, supporting symptom relief and promoting the body’s natural healing process.

Common Symptoms Of Bell’s Palsy

The primary symptom of Bell’s Palsy is sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, which can make it difficult to close the eye or move the mouth on that side. This weakness often appears suddenly, ranging from mild stiffness to complete paralysis, causing drooping around the forehead, eyelid, and mouth corner.

Many individuals with Bell’s Palsy experience altered taste on the front two-thirds of the tongue. This can result in diminished taste perception or a metallic or unusual taste, affecting appetite and food enjoyment.

A common and noticeable feature of Bell’s Palsy is facial droop due to muscle inactivity, resulting in an uneven smile or asymmetry when trying to show teeth or express emotions.

Muscle weakness may make it challenging to close the eye on the affected side, leading to dryness, irritation, and risk of eye injury due to compromised blinking. To protect the eye, some may tape it shut, particularly at night.
