Acupuncture For High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a common health issue that occurs when there is an excessive amount of cholesterol in the blood, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is essential for building healthy cells, producing certain hormones, and synthesizing vitamin D. However, when cholesterol levels, especially low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol, become too high, it can result in plaque buildup in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis. This narrowing and hardening of the arteries restrict blood flow, significantly raising the risk of heart attack or stroke. On the other hand, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol helps remove LDL from the arteries. Factors contributing to high cholesterol include an unhealthy diet high in saturated and trans fats, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and genetics. While high cholesterol can affect anyone, the risk increases with age, particularly in men over 45 and women over 55.

Traditional Chinese Medicine for High Cholesterol

At Axis Acupuncture, our practitioners use Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to offer customised treatments for managing high cholesterol. Here’s why we recommend TCM for those dealing with high cholesterol:

• NATURAL HDL REDUCTION

Symptoms Associated With
High Cholesterol

A major complication of high cholesterol is coronary artery disease, which occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed or blocked by plaque buildup. Symptoms of CAD may include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and fatigue, particularly with physical exertion. These symptoms occur because the heart muscles are not receiving enough blood and oxygen to function properly, especially during stress or activity.

High cholesterol can lead to the formation of blood clots or the rupture of plaque in the arteries, which can cause a stroke. Symptoms of a stroke include sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, visual disturbances, trouble walking, dizziness, and loss of balance or coordination. A stroke requires immediate medical attention as it can result in long-term neurological damage or be life-threatening.

Peripheral artery disease is another complication of high cholesterol, in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs. This condition can cause pain, cramping, and fatigue in the legs, especially during physical activity.

Xanthomas are fatty deposits that appear as yellowish bumps or plaques under the skin, commonly around the eyes, joints, hands, or feet. While xanthomas are not harmful on their own, they can signal that cholesterol levels may be high enough to cause other health issues. Their presence often prompts further testing to assess cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk.
